my favorite christmas book ... ever
My favorite Christmas book is hands down The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. The copy I had growing up is probably long lost in my parents' basement, but I found a copy at a used book store here in Milwaukee and picked it up for about $1. Best investment I ever made. Here's the book's synopsis for those of you who haven't had the joy of reading this Christmas wonder yet:
The Herdmans are the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie, steal, smoke cigars, swear, and hit little kids. So no one is prepared when this outlaw family invades church one Sunday and decides to take over the annual Christmas pageant.
None of the Herdmans has ever heard the Christmas story before. Their interpretation of the tale — the Wise Men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating — has a lot of people up in arms. But it will make this year's pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best one ever.
A story like that is super appealing to a little kid and is still humorous for me as an adult. It has that "everyone is welcome at Christmas time" theme with great 1970s illustrations to boot.
What's your favorite Christmas book?
